my new kitchen counters ;o)

2007-08-31 21:30:23

Susan, Thanks for looking, I'm glad you liked the effect. It is one of my favorites. I'm not sure what you meant - yes, you can embellish your existing cabinets with a stencil - the new directions that DH just brought me say to use 'impasto' medium or thick textured paint. I started out using sheetrock mud (my basic decorating medium LOL) and moved up to that latex woodfiller by Bordon, because it is much more durable. I don't know how the impasto medium would be, probably pretty good, but more expensive. I like the woodfiller, it seems to be very durable, and it's inexpensive and easily obtainable. If you mean can you embellish moldings and then attach them to the doors, yes, you can do that too. Missy's the expert on that one! Take pictures! Liz

suggestions for kitchen cabinets

2007-08-31 21:08:28

I like my new tile countertops - but don't like the cabinets so much. I have two questions - The cabinet doors are made with tongue and groove boards so there are two large grooves running vertically down each door. What do you think I can do to those doors? Some sort of faux finish? maybe molding around the edges and just leave the groves in the center? fill the gooves up with sheetrock mud?? LOL . . second - the upper corner cabinet stinks. I think it is actually the wood itself, it's old. I have painted and caulked and painted and the smell does not go away! any suggestions? Tried the coffee thing, etc. Anyway, I was thinking of removing the cabinet and replacing it with just shelves or something. I guess I could just build a new cabinet. However, it is the corner one that goes behind the other cabinet (you know how when they meet in a corner and aren't built right, one laps over the other?) so do you think that I can do anything? besides just build a new unit? (the more I think about it the more attractive that sounds. Thanks again, Liz

need help - headboard & bench

2007-08-31 10:17:58

Hi Jen, I wouldn't even bother with getting plywood, just get that mdf board (furniture board LOL) it's really cheap - about $13 sheet here. The good thing about it is you can nail into the edges more sturdily than plywood. and you can cut it in any fancy shape you want, without worrying about grain. If you cut the top in a fancy shape, when you go to pad/upholster it, don't worry about trying to wrap the fabric around because it will get bunchy. Just pull it up to the top and staple it. Then put a piece of fabric trim along the top of your headboard to finish it off and hide the staples (learned that from CL) For your bench at the foot of the bed, all you need to do is figure your side height and width dimensions. Subtract the thickness of the board from the height, and nail the top on TOP of the sides, not between. You can make it with just the top and 2 sides, but you will need some bracing - this can be done easily by nailing/gluing a sheet of masonite to the back, or you can go the whole route and make a cube - which is what I would suggest. Just make sure that the top is on top of the sides. If you want to make a recess around the bottom so you can stand close to it (like your kitchen cabinets have) you can make a rectangle of wood (mdf) a bit smaller (about 6" in each direction, to give a 3" overhang) and nail/glue it to the bottom of the cube. Sounds like fun. I'm sure you can find some good ideas on the web. I just saw a great set of instructions for making an ottoman, with an attached upholstered cushion, and I don't know where!! Liz

fireplace screen?

2007-08-31 07:24:17

Hey, what do you call the metal door thing that is on my fireplace? I was trying to find ideas of how to finish it - it is just old rusty metal right now. It is rather thin metal, and I'm not sure if it was supposed to be used when the fire was burning or during the summer to hide the fireplace. I assume that it was just painted a single color .. . like black or something. There is a photo in the photo files . . . I thought maybe it was called a fireplace screen, but all I am finding pictures of are the screen type LOL - well, I guess that makes sense. Any help is appreciated ;o) Liz

Another Paint Question

2007-08-31 06:44:24

Are there better brands of paint to go with? I've gotten paint cards from several locations and the represent several brands. Now I'm wondering if there are brands that are better than others. I have samples from Walmart (ColorPlace), Kmart (Martha Stewart), Diamond Vogel Paint, Dutch Boy, and Lucite. I've never really painted before .... so I'm new at all of this. My dad will probably help me, and I know he knows a lot about basic painting (he's going to freak when I tell him I'm going with a color on the ceiling and he doesn't know anything about faux painting), but I want to know something about picking my own paint. I'm guessing kitchens need a semi gloss ... right? What about the dining room and living room? Thanks for all your help! Kathy

Paint Question Terri F

2007-08-30 16:05:35

HI Terri, Oh I love the faux painting you described. I did my bath with a pearl glaze over a very pale yellow, I put it on with a wallpaper brush so it has these irregular lines, if I would had ragged over them would have been much better. That's what's so good about paint, it doesn't take much to change it. I like Room by Room too. I remember one time they were going to put up a dark wallpaper and had shown how to paint where the seams would be, then when they came back they had changed their minds and did something different. It really helped me to see that yes you might have it all thought out but you can get some up and it is not the right thing. So play around some and see what works. The playing and discovering is so fun. till later Cheryl

Canisters

2007-08-30 05:44:27

Since I'm redoing my kitchen - to the coffee theme (I think) ... I'm looking at my canister set. It is white porcelain with blue accents (flowers). Could I paint the outsides of these and then apply something "coffeey"??? What would I use to paint them? Thanks, Kathy

Paint Question

2007-08-29 22:58:14

If I paint my walls the cream color (in my magnolia picture - see Kathy's Photos in the photo file) ... what color do I pain the ceiling. A friend told me NOT ceiling white. Would I choose a lighter shade on the sample strip? Another friend said don't paint the ceiling too dark, as it will make the room look even smaller. (this is for my kitchen/dining room) Then if I go with the sage green in the living room, do I do a lighter green on the ceiling???? I'm use to renting .... landlords always painted! This is my first house! What about all the faux painting I'm reading about???? Kathy

Paint Question ceiling color

2007-08-29 22:41:47

Morning, On Christopher's show he has recommended to paint the ceiling of the one room to complement the wall of the adjoining room. LR paler creamy DR paler sage. We tried this at my parents. Their LR walls are papered in a warm pinky cream to look like what is now a sponge affect (I'm not describing this well) and the DR wall are a sage. Did ceiling in LR lighter in the sage, DR ceiling is a pale pink, will say we not get that light enough. It is a noticable pink ceiling whereas the LR just looks great and not notice the ceiling is in the green family. We plan to lighten the DR up. Their house is an 1860's so has 9'ceiling but I must say that with the colored ceiling it really makes the room warmer as before you saw those white ceiling, now the ceiling just blend. So guess in a nutshell just keep the ceiling color really really pale. till later Cheryl

Thanks for the ideas ...

2007-08-29 19:03:47

WOW! I just got home from having dinner with a friend. I sure was surprised to see ideas already in my "in box". This is great! I'm going to try to answer each of the questions that were asked. 1. I probably won't do the cabinets right now, but it isn't out of the question down the road. I like the ideas of finding "coffee" handles. Funny thing ... the handles are "new". They were really mismatched when I moved in (last year) and my dad picked these up for me. He didn't pay much for them, so I could replace them when I find something else. 2. As for the living room. My couches are pretty much off white with a few flecks of color. A variety of light colors, but hardly noticable. I'm thinking of the sage green paint in the living room. Will that go with some of the hunter green I have? I really don't need to keep the throws on the backs of the couches. I do have hunter green pillows from Pier One. Other wise I have one floor arrangement with more of a sage green, light burgandy, and gold. I also have some burgandy candles. The carpet is a brown low shag. (not the most up to date carpet, but not in bad shape) I saw an armoire that I liked, but it cost more than I was hoping. They only had the center piece priced. It was 845.00. I thought that wasn't too bad for the whole thing (a shelf unit on each side), but when talking to the sales clerk, she discovered that the shelves didn't have a price. They were each 400.00. YIKES .. that put it up to over 1600.00! I need to HIDE the stereo ... FOR SURE! I don't like that it seems to be the "focal point" in that room! As for the view out the living room window - the large window looks out the front of the house on to the houses across the street. I like the sheers. The side window basically faces the driveway and the neighbors house. No great view from either window - but not bad either. The front window does get the morning sun. I'm not sure if I want pull drapes over the sheers or just a valance??? I'm thinking of a sofa table behind the love seat? Would that give it a foyer feel? What about a chair or two by the window coming in from the front door??? I like the other ideas that were given (the half table, etc...!!) 3. Thanks for the complements on my various pictures. I go back and forth on the coffee pot/tea pot ones. I will probably paint both rooms (dining room and kitchen) the same. I'm leaning toward the creamy color in the magnolia print. 4. I like the idea of a darker color for the back splash area. Should I do any wall paper or tiling? The counter top is very of a light grey. When I was in Menards this afternoon, I notice wall paper border that is the same as the coffee/tea pictures. It was the Debbie Mumm brand. I wasn't crazy about the border. It had the same three items with a denim color top and bottom border. I think that would be too "country" in there, off of the more semi formal looking dining room. I like the pictures, but seeing the border I didn't like is making me think again on the pictures. I'm so indecisive. **GRIN** Any ideas where I can find other "coffee" things that aren't too country looking? I've been trying to look around, but nothing is popping out at me. I'll stop rambling here. If this is taking up too much room in this list, feel free to email me privately. Kathy

Closet colors

2007-08-28 21:51:08

Something I've read, is that when you're trying to figure out what colors to paint or decorate with, look into your closet and see which colors you like to wear OK! Now I am scared. Most of my cloths are in black, red, & denim. I know I have painted in bold colors, but wow! My stable colors are red, black, and gold though, so there must be some truth in it! Angie

OT-disregard SOS

2007-08-28 02:57:15

Hi, it's all fixed! These men!!! As soon as he left the house I took a kitchen knife with a sharp point, and had the gosh-darn drain open in one second. At least I could let the dirty water drain out. We still will need a plumber probably because I don't know how to connect the drain to the rod that opens and closes it. Thanks anyway, Marion

Anyone up to a challenge?

2007-08-28 00:52:40

Hi, I've been on this list for a while. I've been on the digest version and must admit hitting delete from time to time ... but I've now changed to individual emails so I can keep up better! I'm in the process of planning (to decorate) and need help. If I post before pictures in the photo section ... would there be anyone here willing to give me advice? I'll be starting in my diningroom/kitchen. They are two rooms, but open to each other. Thanks, Kajevege (Kathy)

exterior poly question

2007-08-27 21:43:23

I have on hand several brands of water base polly. All state that they are for interior use. I have looked for one that actually states that it is for EXterior use and can't find one. Do any of you know of such an animal or are you using the interior outside? I have painted a picture in a window frame and want to attach it to my little storage building so it will look as though it actually has a window. I did a similar thing a couple of years ago with an old door that had had a window in it. I didn't coat it with anything. It isn't peeling but is fading. What do you guys do? Later, Jayne

SOS

2007-08-27 17:36:13

Help, I've got a plumbing problem with a sink--my husband closed the drain in the bathroom sink, while shaving, and evidently the rod broke than connects it with the pipe, (so you can open and close it). Now we can't get it open. He must have given it a good bang to make sure it was tight, and that's the problem now. It's half filled with water, and he tried to get it open, and it is so tight that it's impossible to open it. He tried to slip a knife in around the side, but it won't go in. I know we will have to call a plumber, but until then, any suggestions? Marion in Nevada

Speaking of kitchen cabinets...

2007-08-27 02:54:13

Did anyone here know that really good cabinets are certified? I didn't. I was watching a show on the Food channel just now and they showed a segment on certified kitchen cabinets. Thought I would pass it on... KCMA - Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association - look for the KCMA seal on your cabinets and you are guaranteed lifetime cabinets! They have a website too KCMA.org I'm going to look in my cabinets know to see if they have this seal! Mary

Painting back patio

2007-08-26 15:46:11

From: <ameneou@... what is really keeping me from it though. I am in need of starting to get some prices on I know just what you mean - I tend to get stymied by my projects. One of my problems (which I am working on) is that I am a perfectionist and want it done right and forever! LOL . . . I'm not sure about painting the back patio. One of my disappointing projects was painting a concrete porch in another house. I scraped and sanded and put muriatic acid down and it still peeled! So, I don't know what to say -but I would be very tempted to use that concrete acid stain - its beautiful and makes it look like real rock. You could score the cement into angles and things and stain them 2 different colors. I just love the look of that stuff. I wish I had cement floors so I could do it! Good luck! Liz

glazing windows

2007-08-26 09:42:50

Hi Terri, Glazing is the stuff that holds the glass in the windows. It is what's on the outside of the windows. It eventually hardens and cracks and has to be replaced. My house is 100 years old and has never had any of this sort of maintenance. All my hundreds of windows (182 in my studio alone! - plus a sunroom with wall to wall french doors) plus there are about 5 double-hung windows in each of the rooms, so I will have lots of practice in glazing windows! Moving kitchen cabinets

2007-08-25 17:01:17

Hi, I'm kinda new here--I hope someone will be able to give some advice based on their experience! My home was built in 1980, when the U- shaped kitchen was the height of kitchen fashion--complete with the counters extending outward and the cupboards (cabinets) are directly above attached to the ceiling to provide a divider between the kitchen and dining area. I would like to remove the cupboards that hover over the counter, to make the dining room and kitchen look like one big room. Right now the two are divided by this chunk of cupboard, and, being a tall person, I find it incredibly inconvenient to chat with anyone on the other side (which all my friends pull up a barstool and sit there!) while I'm in the kitchen area. Any words of wisdom, caution, encouragement, and advice are heartily welcome! I would like to keep the cabinet in one piece and reinstall it on an opposite wall (I still need the cupboard space!). Are they screwed into the ceiling? What is it going to do to the ceiling? Is it a day project? Weekend?? If anyone has moved (or removed) wood kitchen cupboards, please let me know how you did it. Thanks in advance! ~D'Ann Decorate with Style. JS HomeStyle. www.jshomestyle.com/Sandpiper

window boxes

2007-08-25 10:15:21

Hi! I bought some window boxes today for the front of my house. They're redwood, but I want to paint them to match my house. Should they match the siding or the trim around the windows? The siding is tan, the window and house trim are a dark green. Also, does anyone know, if I need to prime them first? They've been treated with a stain- Thanks! Susan

Terri ... king-size/queen-size--more OT

We love it--graduated from a full-size to a queen-size, king-size, and now a Cal. King, which is 6 inches narrower, and 6 inches longer than a regular king. It's lovely to have a lot of room, room to stretch out your arms and legs, and yes, we still sleep close to each other. Need I say more? Marion

fixing a sagging home

2007-08-24 16:25:25

Put shims under the low spots in your house by jacking it up. Jack it up under the main frames...wherever there is a beam or a floor joist or wherever it is sagging... If it is an old house be sure to do this slowly. VERY SLOWLY. it took years for it to settle- give it time to adjust to the new levels. Use regular jacks ( hydrolic) 10 or 12 ton and some are bigger... Good Luck! Sharon in NY

what we've been up to - parade of homes - warning very long!

2007-08-24 14:36:46

Liz et all, First of all, Liz your hearth and table are fabulous. Once again, your artistic talent just shines through whatever you do. Cudos. As to what I've been up to...work, work, work and more work. I've just completed a major upgrade to our clinical system at work so that has occupied every moment of mine...but as of last weekend, the project is over. I've been taking a week to just do nothing whatsoever and enjoy it. We went on vacation to Cancun the last week of May and I'm still reminiscing about it most of the time. But as of yesterday, I've decided it's time to get busy on something domestically constructive. I went to the parade of homes here in our town. They have 3 sections of homes with about 8 houses each to tour. I only made it to 2 of the sections. I went with my MIL, DH, and FIL. My inlaws are redoing their kitchen after an unfortunate/fortunate stove fire. I say fortunate because they are getting a whole brand new kitchen out of it to replace their very dated 1970's one. She wants my help in finishing up the last touches. She already bought a new stove, countertops, sink, microwave, and getting new cabinet handles. We toured the homes to get some ideas. As to the parade of homes...here's my thoughts: The first section of homes were in the 1600-1800 sq ft range and in the $150,000 - $250,000 price range. Some were decorated to the hilt and some were in basic builders beige with no furnishings. My main impression of these homes is they have very elaborate master suites and kitchens at the expense of the rest of the house. Living rooms all have built-in entertainment centers, fireplaces and enough floor space to maybe hold a sofa. I even commented that "hmm, you could sit 2 people in here comfortably" Not my cup of tea. I did like the last one we went in and it won the people's choice and builder's choice for that section. It was much bigger than the rest so the rooms weren't quite so small. Even in the huge master suites, I didn't see a king size bed in one of them. I'm guessing to make the rooms look larger, but other than myself I don't know a single married couple that doesn't have a king size bed. (I prefer a queen) The colors in the homes were very rich, very deep. Lots of golds, creams, greens, burgundies. Lots of faux finished walls (whew! I'm not out of style!) Alot of the finishes, I couldn't tell how they did it and since I consider myself an HGTV and TLC expert I thought I had seen just about every faux finish there was. I didn't like any of these homes enough to think I would want to live in one. On to the next section: These homes were in the 2000-2200 sq ft range and in the $300,000 - $450,000 range. They were NICE! I liked just about every one I saw. My impressions: once again, huge master suites and closets so big they amazed me. I might actually be able to fit all my clothes in them. (yes I have alot of clothes, yes I have alot of sizes...your point?) The colors were basically the same as the previous section. Except with the addition of lots of animal prints. Ceilings were very tall with lots of architectural detail in them. There wasn't a simple flat ceiling in any home. Most of the master suites are separated from the rest of the rooms. There were formal dining rooms, home office's (usually off the living portion of the great room) and mainly big huge great rooms. They had huge expansive kitchens completely open to the living area and then a separate seating area in the kitchen along with a breakfast area and a formal dining area. I really like the look of 2 leather wing back chairs facing the kitchen with a fireplace right there too. There were lots of basements with home theatres in many of them. One in particular had 2 sections on each of the side walls with pleated red velvet and sconce lighting at the top. Hard to describe, but it made it look just like a theatre. Most of them had flat screen HDTVs. You can imagine how my DH drooled over those. My favorite of all of them had a stained concrete floor in most of the house except wood floors in the bedrooms. I have a friend that just learned how to do that technique but I had never seen one done. It was great. I know by talking to my friend that it is very expensive and I can see why. The look is so luxurious and it can withstand large amounts of traffic undamaged. As to getting ideas for my MIL's kitchen/dining room. I just don't know. Most of the kitchens had very little decorating done to them. Lots of granite counters and tile back splashes but it seemed like the decorating was done with those elements and the cabinets. There wasn't alot of wall space to decorate in them. I'm hoping you guys can give me some ideas. Here are the basics. Her new counter tops are a sort of white with sprinkles of other colors in them. It may sound cheesy, but for her they are actually really nice. She bought a black granite sink (very nice) and a new black stove. They bought a built in microwave that now sits above the stove. Their stove is in a counter that has cabinets above it, but is open below it to a bar area where they do most of their eating. The dining room is just past this, so the two are basically one room. They have wood floors and the cabinets are a maple color (guessing on that???). The one long wall that joins the two rooms is my main project. It is wood. Real, tongue and groove wood. The color is maple (not quite matching the cabinets though) They wanted to paint it and I just couldn't see it painted so I talked them out of it. I did tell them to paint the cabinets because I just don't care for the color and they wouldn't go for that. It has a big double window in the dining room area and a door to the their new family room (used to be an enclosed porch and they made it a real room). She used to have the wall so cluttered with stuff you could never really see the wall and she doesn't want to do that again. She bought a clock with some blue and fruit and she has 2 pictures of some fruit that she wants to hang up. They are only 8 X 10's so pretty small. Sooooo... any ideas? I know I haven't given much to go on, but any suggestions would be appreciated. Did I do the wrong thing in telling them not to paint the wall? Thanks for listening...sorry the post was so long! on paneling- we painted wood walls at my MILs house. it took a little courage to get started but the results were so positive. the room looked larger and fresher and we wondered why we had let ourselves be prisoners to the wood for so long. on house leveling- what is the process for this? i live in an 85 year old arts and crafts house. there are a couple of places that have settled. can you fill me in? this might be what i need. lisa

My 'new' table & hearth

2007-08-24 01:33:54

Hi Susan, Thanks for looking & commenting ;o) The pot rack was made from an iron porch railing - the plain new kind they sell at home depot etc. $7 . . . I had it hanging by itself for a long time, and one day, it came to me how easy it would be to put a surround around it. I made it from cheapo particle board scraps that I had laying around. Put some sheetrock compound on it using a stencil and then antiqued it . . . . Oh, and added an old piece of molding around the top. To hold it on the rack, I just put "L" brackets on the surround and it just sits down on top of the railing edges. It can't go anywhere because it's the same size as the railing. Liz

Red Bathroom

2007-08-23 19:57:31

My master bathroom needed to be renovated, but I did not want to spend another $6,000 to renovate my condo. I decided to paint the walls Chinese red (1/3 can paint from my kitchen walls). I threw a Pakistan hand-made carpet ($129) from TJMax on the cracked white tile floor. Added two small white shelves (Target special, $29) and an over the toilet white, glass door cabinet (another Target special, $59). I saved myself $5,000+ dollars and I prefer stepping out of my shower on my hand-made wool and silk carpet. Much better than expense new tiles. Does anyone know where I can buy Charleston balconies, in Charleston, SC? Janet

Green Paint

2007-08-22 10:59:52

Hi All, I have been all over Martha Stewarts web site looking for the name of the color green she uses quite often. Does anyone know where I can find the name of the green she uses. I want to do my livingroom in that color, and the guy at the paint store won't know what Martha Stewart green is (lol). If anyone can help, please let me know. I have looked at samples at Walmart but can't find the right color. TIA, Chris

Software programs

2007-08-22 09:01:15

Hi: I never write, as I am too new at this and am absorbing all the good ideas from the list members. I am going to move to a new house in a couple of months, and want to really decorate it, after upgrading it a bit. Went to Best Buy today and saw a few programs, ranging in price from $19.99 for two disks, to $100+. Has anyone used these computer programs for home design and landscape design? Some looked like they are for actual planning from the ground up, like in custom building. Would love to know which ones are good for just interior designing, or if they are even worth buying. Thanks. I need to start planning soon. Finally got the granite and backsplash picked out, thank god. Normally I am very good at planning things, but this time I am so stuck. Daisy

Couch springs

2007-08-21 23:32:50

Quick question everyone. I pulled my couch out from the wall to pull DD's toys out from underneath, and I noticed that there is a spring that has popped out of place in one of the seat backs... Is there a way to save this? We are getting ready to move, and the couch will no longer be against the wall, it is going to be slipcovered and in the middle of the room, and it is pretty noticeable if you look at the back... It is not noticeable if you sit in that seat though, so I don't know what happened. I really don't want to have to add a new couch to our list of moving expenses :( Thanks in advance for the help!!! OT: Condo Plumbing

Quick off topic question: I've been tasked to find a plumber/contractor to upgrade the boiler room of our condominium complex (replace pipes, raise flooring, etc). Any suggestions about the best way to find a reputable person/company? I was just going to start calling plummers in the yellow pages and have them come out and give estimates. Thanks, Richard

Wood floor is dystroyed/ Now what????

2007-08-20 15:31:03

We just pulled up carpet from our hallway and two back bedrooms. The wood floor is totally destroyed. We are going to try and sand it. I want to paint it but the challenge is that the wood floors in the living room and dining room are mint. The hall floor comes out to meet the living room floor. I have bit of a landing at the top of the stairs where the two meet. What should I do with the stairs? How do I paint the floors and still retain a natural look? Any ideas out there in magic land?? Pergo and carpeting are not an option. Thanks- Susan

Need color advice

2007-08-20 12:55:58

I don't think that the terra cotta would look too orangey. Maybe you could go with a color that is kind of like creamsicle? Not too orangey, but with a hint of cream? And then the other walls could be cream? I don't know; I'm not very good at this stuff, but maybe that would look nice? I love cobalt blue, too. :-) ~Lisanne in NY

where to start

2007-08-20 01:11:34

Thanks so much to Angie and Cheryl for their very specific and practical ideas as to how to get my new decor on track and started. I will print off your ideas and stick them on the fridge to refer to for inspiration........and get shopping!!! Perhaps, rug, fabric, art work, furniture sould be looked at first..and hopefully an "inspiration piece" will jump to the fore!! Thanks again...and hopefully your advice will help others also...... Sue in FL I'll try to remember to take before and after pics and post them in a month or two when I get things accomplished:) BTW...I am on a limited budget so I will have to find some "treasure buys" here and there. There are a couple of re-sale shops in town ( nice quality) where I might be able to get some nice accent pieces........ And I'd love to get a chaise.....I love the look of them!!

sewing instructions for flap pillow?

2007-08-20 00:52:57

Hi Does anyone have a link to any instructions for sewing pillows that have a flap in them? I'll try to describe what I'm talking about. The pillow looks like a pillow made in one fabric, with a pillow cover tied over it so that you can see a bit of the 'original' pillow inside. But it's actually just a pillow cover with ties, and a coordinating flap of fabric that tucks inside and appears to be the 'original' pillow. Did that make sense? I have made some, but wondered if there were some 'tricks' to it that I might learn. I like the look. Thanks for any help Liz

where to start ideas

2007-08-19 08:54:26

never seem to suggest where to start for a theme...where to get the ideas from.. I always ask people if they have a favorite picture/print. Maybe a favorite theme (Frogs or roses). Do you have a favorite plant? Maybe a huge Palm in your living room that you can build from? Sometimes it is fun to take a favorite "theme", lets say for example, light houses, then go to ebay and punch in "light houses". You can get great accent ideas. I think in your case I might try "panther" or "tropical". You may have to get more details description, but if you start broad, there will be things that will inspire you to look up a smaller topic. Fabric is also a great idea, just as was mentioned before. Angie

mosaic for coffee table?

2007-08-19 02:41:47

I have a large coffee table and two end tables which have been with me for a few years. I want to do something with just the tops, and all I could think of was putting on ceramic tile------but that seems rather boring. Today I was wondering if mosaic stone would look good on it, or if anyone has ever done it. Any other suggestions would also be most welcome. Our house is headed for the restored farm house look. "where to start" advice needed

2007-08-18 23:59:08

Hi guys and gals.......Thought I'd pick your brains a bit...... I live in FL in a nice ranch home ( have mentioned my dusty rose tile before.......) and am going to redecorate!! New furniture in Family room, etc. I've lived here 8 years and as I look around I realise there is no theme, nor rhyme or reason to my decor!! I will be buying sofa and chairs, tables and re-painting. No drapes..... have louvered doors aside all 3 of my sliders leading out of main living spaces onto lanai/pool area. Woodwork is light cream, tile floors this dusty rose..which has to stay unfortunately. So.......how would you suggest I go about starting??? I've been thinking...here I am, 58, and can do what I want!! As long as hubby agrees:) The things I love are plants and animals...have extensive gardens and that's what people notice when they come here. So I've been thinking of using plants and animals within my theme. Opinions?? The painting of walls I've started is done in a medium green...a "MArtha" color...Have done only 2 walls in large entryway/dining room..... Thanks for any thoughts you'd like to share:) Sue

Hi! New and have a question :)

2007-08-18 13:06:10

Hi All! I have a question, and am hoping that someone can help me out. I am wanting to get matchstick blinds for my living room windows, and I have found a place that carries 2 style that I like... One is a typical matchstick design, and the other are the mesh style. (I am including the links to the 2 I like) The question I have is, has anyone ever cut some length off of these themselves? The place will do it for a $15 fee (each blind), but I would really like to do it myself. Both styles rollup from the bottom, though, and I wouldn't want to mess up that ability. If anyone knows how to do this, I would appreciate the info! Thanks in advance!!! www.my-callaloo.com/Hymanhtms/JPhtms/JPBambooRollupMesh.htm www.my-callaloo.com/Hymanhtms/BRNatural.htm

paint finishes & ideas

2007-08-18 03:14:30

My neighbor and I walk about twice a week. I live in a remote area on a lake. You know what that means, every uncaring, unfeeling, slob around comes out here to dump off their animals. Then the bob cats eat them. Nearly every week at this time of year we find an animal. It is getting so no one wants to talk to us because they're afraid we want them to take in an animal. We get them all de-fleaed and de-ticked and if necessary back to health and try our best to find a home. Last week it was a female, part Boarder collie. We managed to find her a home. This morning it was a male German Shepherd. This is just a baby, maybe four months old. Seems to be very smart and a good looking pup. You know where this is going don't you?! Does any one out there want a male German Shepherd puppy? They are very good with children. I live in central Oklahoma but would do my best to work out something to get him a home. Sorry if this too far off subject, but we're getting desperate. Later, Jayne

What did you do to prep? I saw it on Trading Spaces and it's been suggested by several friends as a cheap & easy fixup. So, I'd love to hear from someone who's actually done it! Table and Chest/Distressed Look?

I have a Lane cedar chest that has been painted with white acrylic paint. What is the best way to give it a distressed look? I really do not want to go through stripping the chest. need ideas for rooms----jungle and salt water fish and the beach

2007-08-15 07:36:50

I am sick of putting up and tearing down wallpaper, and I have no artistic talent for painting, although I absolutely love murals. Our den is being done for the kids, ages 4 to 13, in a jungle decor. Also, one child wants salt water fish (whales, dolphins, ocean waves stuff) for his room and the other wants Hawaiian beach scenes in his room. Any suggestions for the walls would be appreciated. Cushion Cleaner

2007-08-14 17:42:15

Hi guys, While staining my deck I had to take the patio furniture off. After removing our furniture covers, I noticed my cusions for my chairs are dirty, dingy and some bird droppings too! (How they got under the cover is a miracle, LOL) The covers don't come off - they are sewn together. There are no manufacturer direction tags on cleaning. Anybody have a recipe or suggestion for a simple cleaning solution? I don't want to use Shout or a fabric cleaner - would be too harsh, I think. I just want to give them a quick cleaning with a brush, hose them off, and let the sun dry them. Wish they could fit in my washer, LOL.. Thanks in advance! Mary

Dress up your wood floors!

2007-08-14 09:54:47

I saw a segment on a home improvement show on how to dress up your wood floors. A bit of history: In our old house we had beautiful dark wood floors with ribbon borders. They were just gorgeous! We moved to our new house two years ago next month :) I love my new house but wasn't too thrilled with oak wood. It is light and I just loved my dark wood. Anyhow, I wanted to add some dark to our foyer floor. So I added a bit of a fun boarder. We have a paladium window above our front door. Straight on three sides and curved across the top. I wanted to tie in that shape with a design for the foyer floor. So, I drew on my computer a brown paladium shape. Printed out about 50 of them. Cut them out by hand and decoupaged them to the foyer floor. With two coats of polyurethane, I love the design and the dark brown added to our oak floors. What do you think? (See my photo album). YAY! (and a question)

2007-08-13 04:07:50

The bdrm furniture is coming today!!!! I finished a new comforter for the ds3's new captain's bed, had a hard time finding the same fabric I used on the youth bed, but I did get it and it's all ready now.. MY ROOM IS GOING TO HAVE FURNITURE! I can't believe it! It's been empty except for the bed all this time. It's all painted and the mural is done, I'm all set, I even cleaned my carpets, lol. Question, I have a neat table that I did a funked up paint job on that I am going to re-do for ds3's jungle room. Thinking of a zebra pattern, those who have done this, do you paint it solid black first and add the white stripes, or solid white and add the black? Or does it even matter? The table is basically black, so when I sand and re-spray it, I am hoping the black is first because that would be easier to over. I have a zebra pattern stamp I have never used that I'm hoping will do a good job adding the stripes, thanks, Missy

My deck is fried!

2007-08-12 10:16:56

We get sun on our deck from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm! All day it bakes. It isn't worth staining anymore because the wood has splintered. It will have to be replaced in a couple of years. But, I need to make the floor of the deck look better! The rails don't look that bad - or at least not bad enough for me to care, LOL... Question: I have to paint the floor. Not stain. Stain won't cover anymore. What type of paint would you suggest? Remember it has to be sturdy from sun all day. And of course, walking, rain, etc. I know I would have to use an exterior wood paint, but is there one strictly for decks? Thanks! Mary

Brown Craft Paper

2007-08-12 06:53:42

painting basement floor

How to tie several different looks together? W/ color, using the same or similar ones throughout on walls, floors? W/ fabric, using the same or co-ordinating fabrics in adjoining rooms on pillows, window treatments, upholstery? Outdoor Toy Box

But what about any of the larger and sturdier plastic containers ..Rubbermaid or generic brand...that you could paint or decorate in some way. A faux painting technique on the plastic bin and then maybe make a lid from plywood and cover it with batting and then some outdoor fabric. Some of those fabrics out now for outdoor picnic tables are beautiful! They have a felt-type backing and the fabric is wipable/washable. You'd have a twofer....a nice looking container to hold all the toys and an extra seat or foot stool on the porch. Trez

my progress today

2007-08-08 00:19:31

Just finished constructing my pullouts, all the sawing and hammering hurts my ears and my arms are tired, but I think it burns a lot of calories!, lol Now to sand and paint them "luckily" for me it's 104* today so they should dry quick, lol. Then on to the install, I got the sizes right the first time and they do all actually fit through the doors, another concern of mine, lol. i still haven't done the clear coat though! I need to do that, thought I'd be done with that, maybe I'll start after I get these painted and they are drying...Missy

Tile Backsplash in Kitchen

2007-08-07 09:21:39

I'm remodelling my kitchen and found some wonderful tile for an "up the wall" backsplash. In other words, I will have a 4" granite backsplash, with tile above that to the bottom of the wall cabinets, the bottom of the range hood, you get the idea. However, I just noticed that I have about 8 electrical plugs and outlets in the way of the tile area! What does one do in this situation? Thanks mimi2

New Chat & New Cleaning Product ;o)

2007-08-06 20:43:21

Ok guys, I know the chat thing has been irritating, but I was hoping that one day would stand out as a popular day for a chat. I didn't get much response to the poll, so I took the few responses I did get and decided that Wednesday looks like a good day for a chat - 8pm Central Time for a group chat. This means it's 7pm Eastern Time, and um, who knows what time California time ;o) With only one chat per week, you might have a better chance of meeting up with fellow IM-ers . . . I went to Costco yesterday, my sister picked up a bottle of their generic grease cleaning stuff (gallon for $4) and while she was fixing my car console, I thought I'd clean the pieces she was taking out - You cannot believe how good this stuff works. I put a tiny bit in a pint of water. Two swipes and the emergency brake looked like new! (it had been filthy) . . . I had bought the Castrol stuff, but this is BETTER - it also cleaned the fabric upholstery just by wiping it with a wet rag - all the dirt came off onto the rag, we were going around trying it on different things, we looked like an infomercial LOL ok, back to your regularly scheduled home decor stuff ;o) Li

Fixing "Custom" made desk

2007-08-06 18:11:53

Hi everyone. As I was removing everything from the desk that I bought five years ago for $5.00, I realized I just needed to modify it. It is a very practical corner unit with two "cabinets" that the top rests upon. The top of the desk is made of plywood. The interior is much more substantial. I would like to resurface the top and reinforce the drawers that I've chipped/ripped in a few places (my chair hit it) I need some feedback please on how you gals/guys think would be the best way to resurface and what material to use to reface or replace the drawers. Secondly, the drawers are so squeaky loud when I pull them out, it's like nails across a chalkboard. Last year I tried rubbing a wax candle on them but it didn't help. There does not appear to be much room to even apply proper hardware. Any suggestions? I'm looking forward to what you all have to say about this. Thanks in advance. janice

I know what that's like--my glass tray in my microwave shattered, but it was thro my stupidity. I had washed it and put it ontop of my stove for a few minutes. Without thinking I turned on one of the burners for some reason, and an edge of the tray was sitting on it. What a shock--we were right in the kitchen--and the tray exploded on my tile floor. Luckily the glass was tempered, so tho it broke into a billion pieces, they weren't sharp pieces. And tho I cleaned and vacuumed and scrubbed, tiny pieces are still appearing. Will your home-owners' insurance cover this? I would write to the company and tell them just what happened--there should be some reimbursement for this. You should also get paid for pain and suffering. Aren't you glad it didn't happen on Mothers' Day? Hope you have a good one. Marion

Shattered oven

Ok, I just had a really freaky day today. Me and my daughter went out for awhile today and when I came home there was glass allllll over my kitchen floor! The door on my GE electric wall oven shattered. Now I have never ever seen anything like this before. The oven has not been used since early this week, everything was off in the house and the only one home was my cat who on top of this escaped the house this morning and he's an indoor cat and was lost for over an hour and a half. I called a repairman who said this is a common occurence with these kinds of GE ovens. Now if this is true, how can they sell these things and not get sued? I'm glad we werent home when this happened or my daughter or her friend who was over earlier could have been hurt had they been near it. the glass shattered the whole way over to the other side of the kitchen! Anyway, sigh...I just needed to vent a bit. Hope ya all had a better day than I did and happy mom's day to everyone! Melissa

today's progress

2007-08-05 09:39:19

Boy, this is just PAINFULLY slow going! I am ready to jump out of my skin! Liz, don't know where you got the idea I cut that moulding in 1 day, lol, try THREE days! Now, I have to about 8 or 9 more doors to do step 4 of 5 on, the rest are all finished drawers, etc. I am going to put the knobs on and re-hang the doors, then do step 5, which is just rubbing black glaze over the grooves and in the trim. Then I am going to do the clear coat in a cuple days after all this really gets a chance to dry, it's dry as bone and hotter than u know what here, and these things are still taking forever to dry! Fortunately it is looking good and I am very happy with what I see. I know it will be worh it in the end, but I just want it to be OVER! lol, Missy (ps, I don't say this to discourage people from doing this, it is isn't "difficult" it's just a lot of steps and patience and with 3 kids and a blown apart kitchen it's just not easy, that's been the hardest part!)

putting doors back!

I can't believe it! This is great!. I am still not done, BUT I am in love! I am putting the doors back on. Then I need to do step 5, rubbing the doors with black glaze (just in the cracks and details) put the knobs and handles on, then I will clear coat on Mon.. It does look magnificent already! Can'tw ait to show the before and after, quite the transformation!!! Missy

OT good buys for the week

2007-08-04 13:55:03

I've been looking for a cuisinart food processor for over 2 years since my last food processor died - they NEVER go on sale (or not cheap enough for me!) I just got one for $89 at Home Depot of all places! It's the LC-5 or something like that, the exact model that is $180 everywhere else I have looked - thought you might like to know! Also, big lots has tons of stamps - both the scrapbooking kind and the wall kind - great great prices! and some really neat stamps. The scrapbooking ones are 29 cents to 79 cents (really nice stamps) and the others are 59cents to $2.99 for a big bag of them. AND the dollar tree has a complete kit for painting, 2 small foam brushes (about 4" and 5") and 3 brushes AND a pan for $1 . . . I love those tiny rollers. what else . . . I got an orek vacuum at a yard sale for $3 and just got the bags in the mail - wow that vac really works great - I love it. And it's definitely worth every penny I paid <grin Anyone else get some great purchases this week? Liz

problem!

Some white things were flying in the air and of course found all my 29 freshly painted and still wet cabinet doors sitting out in the sun, OMG! I have to get more paint! This will never end will it? I am never going to have my kitchen back together am I? I am never getting this primer off my nuckles either. This project is a most royal PIA! "Back to the store for more" ( my motto of the week!) But I just had a wild thought--how about painting it yourself? Especially if you are going to replace it, you have nothing to lose. You could leave the carpet the color it is, but if you paint whatever you want, it will mute the color of the background, and that color won't be too noticeable. You can do this if your carpet is not looped, and doesn't have a very high map. Maybe get some stamps or make your own stencil and do cars, or roadways with green shrubbery along side---you have an idea as to what will work as far as design--if you have a small piece of the same carton you could see what kind of paint would work. I believe that acrylic or latex paint would probably work pretty well. This is probably a wild idea, or maybe it isn't. I'm sure that our creative decorators will have some ideas, maybe better than this. Marion

I've not posted here (just lurking & enjoying all the great advice, etc <g and this is going to maybe sound like a strange question. But here goes anyway - does anyone here or has anyone ever changed their carpet color by dying it? Faux leather...

2007-08-03 10:09:19

Hi all! I want to do my fireplace in the faux leather treatment. I got the instructions from the archives and went to purchase the items. Dilemma - The Modge-Podge and the Decoupage Medium both state that the finish is "gloss" and is permanent. Then how do you put the shoe polish on? I could not find any of the products in a matte finish. So, would I be able to put the paper on with wall paper paste, dry, polish and then put on a sealer? Help! Thanks, Dita, in S. Cal. P.S. I go to the store in my grungies and I will be 54 this year. Shhhhh, it is a secret!

I'm up to something

2007-08-03 06:47:44

I started on my kitchen cabs yesterday, after days of scurrying around and finding all the various assorted sundries I need to do the faux cherry finish. I just finsished the moulding insets which I started on yesterday, that took FOREVER! I had 29 doors and I mitered 4 pieces for each door inset with my little miter box and saw. Now I am going to put the crown moulding along the tops of the cabinets. Back to work :-) Missy

Janice's story continues

2007-08-02 15:34:37

What I forgot to tell you was that I really needed to take a bath because of my ******g back. When I would take a bath, I'd fall asleep, wake up with no water in the tub and have to mop the entire floor! I was swearing an awful lot. As for the rent. Rent controls have been lifted in Toronto. But, since I was here while it was in place, then I'm somewhat protected. I agree with you about not investing too much. I don't really plan on doing too much until I get to meet the new owner. I have an advantage over alot of people. I am a legal secretary and presently work for a very large firm in Toronto. (although at this very moment my present boss is meeting with his new secretary) I'm on a six month contract here. It was three but they just extended it yesterday. I have until the first week of September. As for not getting nasty with my landlady: We have a long history. SHe has taken advantage of me in certain areas but last year I lost my job and she called me and asked if I had enough money for rent. SHe even offered to hold off on it until I could pay. That was and still is very impressive to me. Also, when she sold the building we had a fight over a few issues and I stopped payment on the rent cheques. (This is a woman who I have to call and ask to cash my rent cheques - She's been known to not cash them for three months) (Exceptionally wealthy family) When I hurt my back 2 months ago, I was very sick. She didn't know that I had went back to work. I have not paid rent since March but I will pay her once we do the adjustments for interest on my last month's deposit. She will get her money on May 31st. I had lent money to a girlfriend and that is when her house is closing. As well, she is finally buying me the new fridge I should have had five years ago. There are alot of checks and balances in our relationship. I know her well enough that if I told her I couldn't pay the three months rent - that she would simply write it off. I won't do that. So now you understand my saga. A little more about me. I'm a professional entertainer (clown & fairy godmother) in addition to being a legal secretary (it comes in very handy when I have to pump myself up and tell myself I'm in a good mood and gonna have a great day!) I truly love this group. I can't believe that I actually salivate when I go to Home Depot. A couple of weeks ago, I swallowed my pride and borrowed their electronic wheel chair. I can't keep my balance, let alone walk for long periods. The lady who gave me the keys to the wheelchair was aghast when I returned it 3 hours later. Must go. Thanks for enjoying my writing. I certainly your's. (I spent Friday night printing all these different posts off). Took me 4 hours. Bye. Janice B. Janice's apartment--OT

2007-08-02 09:26:40

Janice, you are the most patient person--you deserve a big medal! First of all, a bathtub is a necessity of life, and when it wasn't fixed in a reasonable time you should have called the authority or department that handles this. I understand why you didn't, you didn't want to upset the applecart, mainly the rent situation. Do you live in an area that has rent control? I was wondering about this when you said the upper apartment pays so much more. You've been a wonderful tenant, one that landlords dream about, and I hope all the repairs get done. Now that the building has been sold, did you think about the fact that the new owners might raise your rent to current rental levels? I don't want to give you something to worry about, but I wouldn't put too much money into the apartment yourself, until you see what happens. Buildings are bought and sold, and unless the new buyers are looking for something to write off, they need to make a profit. So I would advise (not that you are looking for advice, but I can't help giving some) that you don't spend too much in decorating, unless you have a lease. The best to you, Marion

Dining Room and couple of other projects

2007-08-02 04:12:40

I finally got pictures of the dining room posted. I was waiting to take pics for the mirror/window to get finished and hung so it would look more complete. All the pics are posted. Don't know how to get the link but it is in the Laura folder. The only thing left to do is make a curtain or valance for the window/mirror and a matching one for the kitchen window. I found 2 Sonoma Fruit pattern valances at Goodwill for $5/pr. So I took the ones I had bought at Linen's N Things back!! I picked up a couple of cream/tan/brown/green plaid table napkins for $2 at a garage sale. Now I want to use those 4 pieces of fabric to make the matching treatments and need some ideas. Only catch is the top can't be longer than 8" as not to block DH view. Would love your input. Also pics of a couple other projects just finished recently. Guess I need to post pics of LR so you can see how all that coordinates.

I am so proud of myself - You will not hear this often - if ever ag

2007-08-01 20:54:58

I've been lurking here and at Liz's other site but rarely post. I live in a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment - ground floor - partial basement. It's huge, with a kitchen the size of some found in houses. The building has not been maintained well and quite frankly, any time someone "fixes" something, it's usually done wrong and creates another problem. I've lived here for 12 years. Did I mention that the rent is so good that the person living upstairs from me is almost paying double? I have many problem areas that need fixing but my bathroom is a nightmare. The tub does not hold water. My landlady who I swear, holds an auction to get the lowest bidder, gets what she pays for. SHe has repeatedly brought in this one fellow who I don't mess with. He does not speak English and I know that he has convinced her that the reason the water does not stay in the tub is that my weight ( Queen Size gal) is crushing the tub somehow. THe problem is the water comes out from along the seal of the tub where it connects with the floor. It has been known to come out the otherside as well, which is a set of cupboards and it leaks all over my kitchen floor. The excuses they have come up with was making me crazy. This is close to a year old problem. It magnified when she finally sold the building (which her parents owned for 50 years). The deal closes at the end of the month. First they were convinced it was because the drains were backed up. So they sent in a plumber to snake it. Unfortunately, he couldn't go through the drain because if he broke it, the tub is so old, they would have had to remove the entire tub. (I was hoping that would happen) They removed the (pardon me I don't know what it's called, but the drain that is halfway up the tub) and snaked it through there. And then they left the hole open. It was five inches in diameter. She called me and said not to get any water in it. I couldn't believe she was going to leave it like that. I covered it with plastic. Finally, she sends in my secret admirer (we don't understand one another) and he puts a new thing-a-ma-bobee. He also decided to caulk all around the tub. Problem was it was wet and moldy (sorry). I begged them not to do it. He sat there smiling because we could not find the plug to the drain so we used a waste paper basket to cover it. He filled the tub and there was no leaking. (there is a clue here) Of course once I removed the garbage bin, it was leaking again, even when I was taking a shower. The dynamic duo (dingbat and the landlady) thought of sealing up where it was leaking. I had to scream at her that water would find someplace else to go and she was only delaying this and leaving me with this problem. She stared at me blankly (she is a very smart woman but plays dumb so well) I finally called someone I trusted and he explained on the phone what he thought it was and then came down and confirmed it. The seal around the drain was compromised. He told me to clean it well, let it dry and then use the clear silicone and work it under the rim and so on. Physically I couldn't do it because I seriously injured my back about six weeks ago. I called him and asked him if he would do it. He said he would call me when he could. After a week, I couldn't wait.
