Bench Plans

But I want to make the breeze way into an office, for my Mary Kay Business. But I would like to also include a sleeper sofa for when I have my parents, or sister comes to visit. So I need some ideas. Kim, Exactly how large is this "breezeway" If it's large enough to hold a bed and an office, that is a room in my books. Could you put together a long wall of storage and a desk that can all be closed up when company arrives? I was recently at a party at a house of someone that has alot more money than me :) and she had this really cool room that had shelving all along both long walls. On one side it had all of her Christmas decorations and the other wall had her crafts and such (she had a gift wrap section that I would kill for) but with all the doors shut, it didn't look like a bunch of storage shelves, it looked great. I'm still green with envy that she has that room and I have a laundry room that could be made into that kind of space very easily....but I would have to do the laundry that is forever cluttering the floor. stenciling on walls

2007-01-31 20:16:16

I am starting to get in the decorating mode again and I have a question I hope someone can answer. Remember many moons ago I was seeking suggestions for a quote to go around my dining room walls as a border? Well I finally decided on one and now I have another dilemna. I bought some letter stencils, but exactly how do you spell out words and such with them? I keep thinking if I have to tape each letter down, I will have to wait for the previous letter to dry...at that rate I might finish the border when I'm too old to climb the ladder. LOL Is there an easy way I am missing? Terri

sickness and Halloween plans

2007-01-31 11:07:28

First of all, Liz, I'm mad at you! I think you sent me that cold bug through the list. :) I have been down with a cold for about a week and besides everyone in my life assuming I have anthrax, I haven't accomplished a single thing. As a matter of fact I was lying down last night (a common thing for me lately) when my hubby pointed out that we are not quite as done with our house as I thought. He showed me at least 3 areas that need trimming and then told me I need to recaulk the bathtub (we recently replaced the inner workings of the faucets, which reminds me to tell everyone that Pfister faucets are the best! we have really hard water and it clogs up the faucets and since they have a lifetime guarantee, they send us new parts free of charge every 6 months or so!). Tomorrow is Halloween and although I am not dressing up like I wanted too (I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and wanted to be Hermione while my hubby could be Harry) I am planning on a few trick or treaters. Since I live in the country and get very few people, mainly my next door neighbors, do you think it would be ok to make little gift bags with their names on it with homemade goodies? I know everyone on my street and I was wanting to do something a little personal for them. I know things are really scary this year, but I really want to let the little girl next door think all's well. She is only 5 and I am hoping her mom lets her at least come to my house. Terri

Dont tell me your afraid of the effects of the bug spray on yourself?? LOL.....do we have to go over the whole "crazy artist" thing again? Speaking of crazy artists, I made this card last night, drew the " scribble tree" myself, watercolored it etc.....showed it to my dh Mike and he stared at it for a minute, then when I said " I drew it myself!".... he said " Were you drunk?"........LOL Brenda And I like BM paints the best although Ive been using our Home Hardware brand and its pretty good, but just using it for temporary things...

2007-01-30 07:34:15

This is the bedroom I want to do. I am going to have my husband help me with this project. We are going to make this bed....It really doesnt look that difficult. Let me know what you think and would love to hear your ideas. I have a table similiar to the little bedroom table I am going to paint in white as well..I am going to distress the paint on bed and table and I have a shelf as well ..all in crackle paint white or offwhite.....probably distress it with some sandpaper too to make it look older...going after that shabby chic look. I decided to put up mini shutters in the bedroom and forgo curtains other than a valance maybe at the top or window scarf over the top. Would love to hear your ideas and opinions Vicci

Hi all! After looking at too many wallpaper books on the site, I picked up the phone and asked for help. The customer service person couldn't have been nicer and now I have the title and can call around to make sure someone has it instead of traipsing all over Houston. One funny note, I thought she said Bookkeepers Inn , and couldn't find it - looked some more and found Beekeepers Inn. Hope to get the real deal and see it up close and personal. Blessings, Paula

I know, I know, I am VERY high maintenance. :) I will be ready to head for Home Depot as soon as the hubby gets home. I am soooo excited. Thanks so so much! Paula

nad... my own new tv show

2007-01-28 22:00:41

I am working on a TV pilot, it's called "3 Barfing Kids, the Rug Doctor and You". I wish I could say it is a sitcom, but it ain't funny! It's more like a documentary of my life, at least for the next 24-36 hours. This is so gross, I HATE when they get the stomach flu, oh WHY oh WHY????!!Been up since 3am with the little pukers, if I make it through the rest of today with them without jumping off the roof I will be amazed.. Well, time to go open all windows and rev up the Rug Doctor I rented at 6am!!! Missy

just gotta share -- my *new* kitchen

2007-01-28 11:40:49

Good Monday Morning, Interior Motives Listers! I just had to share the success (thank goodness!) of our latest DIY project ... Our kitchen, et al. project is approximately 98% completed (some minor touch-up work, re-merchandising the cabinets, etc. is all that's left to do) - AND - I absolutely LOVE the transformation ... My previously *UGH* white kitchen, breakfast room and hallway are now the most luscious shade of brick red (with a tiny hint of terra-cotta undertones) with rich light caramel ceilings. The cabinets that once faded into the background now literally *pop* with pizzazz! Red walls, green countertops, caramel ceilings, caramel cabinets, white appliances ... everything literally 'came-alive' when the colours were added. And, in the midst of the painting project, my DH suggested that we leave one end wall down a bank of cabinets and behind the stove unpainted because he knew I had always wanted a tile backsplash and he said he would install one once the painting was completed ... now the search was on for the perfect tile for the backsplash. My search didn't take long when I found a tile mural set and matching single tiles in a fruit motif on white ... an array of fruit - pears, grapes, plums, lemons and green leaves - made up the mural set, with one - or a combination of two - of the fruits on the individual tiles. I chose a solid high-glazed white tile for the field tile and the mural was placed above the stove with the matching single tiles added at the four corners of the mural. The field tile brought the white up from the appliances and onto the wall which really seemed to make the transformation complete. Once the touch-up painting and merchandising are complete, I'll post some photos of the *new* rooms ... *doing the happy-my-main-level-is-almost-completely-painted dance* (now for the two-story foyer *yikes* and the upper & lower levels *ugh*) Wishing You Successful Decorating! ~ Kitty ~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~.~~ Susan Reno-Gilliland Interiors susan@... Skunk

2007-01-27 22:10:25

Okay tonight was an aweful night. I was sitting here reading my email. Still trying to catch up. Making progress. My husband was at his desk and me at the computer when all of sudden we hear barking and growling from the dogs and its getting worst. We run out to the sun room and put the light on for the porch. Tipper my female coming running in thru the doggie door and I look out the door and it smells liking something is burning. Sam my male puppy who takes everything thru the doggie door is outside squinting. The air is filled with something. My husband looks out into the yard and low and behold a skunk leaving our yard. The dogs got sprayed. The skunk must have gotten in our sun room because the smell out there is so bad. Its also smelling in my house. I opened the windows to the other side of the house in all the bedrooms and front room. I put all the ceiling fans on. spraying deorderizer everywhere. My dh went up to work and is getting a neutralizer. My cousin and his wife are driving in from their trip to Vegas. I have been cleaning thru out the day and have last minute stuff to do tomorrow. We took the dogs straight into the shower. I happen to have a can of tomatoe juice in the pantry. I almost was about to throw it out. Does anybody have an ideas on how to get the smell out of wicker furniture and a rug that we have in there. I have pergo flooring down in this room. I cannot believe this. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lorretta

New Member Intro

2007-01-27 14:25:24

Hi! I joined this group in early September and had planned to send an intro at that time but I seemed to get side-tracked after the terrorist attacks. I've been a member of several other egroups for about 1 1/2 years which pertain to eBay and specifically buying/selling/trading brand name children's clothing. I am an admitted shopaholic and I love buying children's clothing because of the fun colors, fabrics and styles while dressing my daughters to look their best! I am also an avid planner and seem to make lots of plans for my home but only implement about 1/4 of them - and those only get completed because my wonderful husband is a "finisher". So we make a good team - I get things started and he follows through to completion. We live in a typical suburban home near Austin, Texas and have added some character by painting a few rooms. Our dining room is chinese red, the living room is sage green, the "great room" is yellow, the powder room is blue and our master bath is orange (it was supposed to look like the "sunset" - oops!). We have also added crown molding to these rooms. Our next big project is our kitchen. We would like our kitchen/family room area to say "WOW" since we love to entertain and this room gets used the most. I am picturing a kitchen right out of a magazine with built-in fridge, gorgeous cabinet fronts and granite island to go with the existing Corian counters. We will probably hire a design consultant to help with lighting, decorative touches and general planning. Where I need the biggest help, and have most enjoyed reading everyone's ideas for their own homes, is overall decorating. My girls are almost 2yrs and 4 1/2 years. They are extremely active and I have kept all decorating to a minimum, so most of my rooms look pretty "Blah!" In fact, several rooms are decorated a la Fisher-Price and Playskool. LOL! So......if anyone has ideas for decorating up high in out of reach places please send them my way! Thanks if you have read this far. :) Best Wishes, Ann

O T... grey fox

2007-01-27 02:44:56

Any one know about the habits of the grey fox? I went to an auction last night (hummm, good, lots of stuff). This was in a building one block off Main St. Next to an abandoned building in a fenced lot was a family of grey fox. The male had been reduced to begging for food to keep his little family alive. We bought wieners from the concession stand to give him. I am taking Dog Chow down there today. I'm afraid to do anything that will call too much attention to them for fear that some "bubba" will shoot them. Any one have any ideas? Picking aren't too great on paved streets. I have no idea where they find water. Later, Jayne

Never thought about that, thx for the suggestion! =) ~Michele~ Michele, Could you put window treatments on the lower part of the windows. Like Christopher Lowell did. Then add free standing cabinets in front of that. Maybe go with a "French" look to pull it off. I think it would be gorgeous! Deirdre

Margaret. I had to laugh about men and the paneling. when we lived in Lubbock we had real dark paneling. We had this house for 15 years. My husband loved it. I told him that starting on Jan 1st, 2 years before we sold this house, I was going to paint the living room white. I was going to brighten up this house so 1 we could sell it and 2 so I could enjoy it for awhile. On Jan 1st I started packing up the living room and he was saying what are you doing. I told him that was it Enough with the dark room. I found this beautiful cottage white and I was painting the room. It took a month because I did most of it myself. When it was time to redue the kitchen It took a week because he was ready to do it. Too funny on how guys love dark paneling. Lorretta

totally OT: COMPREHENSIVE ARTICLE ON BIO TERRORISM (nad duh)

2007-01-25 01:43:38

" But now, thus says the Lord, you Creator, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel, "Do not fear , for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, and they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you." Is. 43:1,2 SFC Red Thomas (Ret) Armor Master Gunner, Mesa, AZ Reproduction and distribution is authorized and encouraged. Just give me credit for my work. Since the media has decided to scare everyone with predictions of chemical, biological, or nuclear warfare on our turf I decided to write a paper and keep things in their proper perspective. I am a retired military weapons, munitions, and training expert. In the mid 1990s there were a series of nerve gas attacks on crowded Japanese subway stations. Given perfect conditions for an attack less than 10% of the people there were injured (the injured were better in a few hours) and only one percent of the injured died. 60 Minutes once had a fellow telling us that one drop of nerve gas could kill a thousand people, well he didn't tell you the thousand dead people per drop was theoretical. Drill Sergeants exaggerate how terrible this stuff was to keep the recruits awake in class (I know this because I was a Drill Sergeant too). Forget everything you've ever seen on TV, in the movies, or read in a novel about this stuff, it was all a lie (read this sentence again out loud!)! These weapons are about terror, if you remain calm, you will probably not die. This is far less scary than the media and their "Experts," make it sound. Chemical weapons are categorized as Nerve, Blood, Blister, and Incapacitating agents Contrary to the hype of reporters and politicians they are not weapons of mass destruction they are "Area denial," and terror weapons that don't destroy anything. When you leave the area you almost always leave the risk. That's the difference; you can leave the area and the risk; soldiers may have to stay put and sit through it and that's why they need all that spiffy gear. These are not gasses, they are vapors and/or air borne particles. The agent must be delivered in sufficient quantity to kill/injure, and that defines when/how it's used. Every day we have a morning and evening inversion where "stuff," suspended in the air gets pushed down. This inversion is why allergies (pollen) and air pollution are worst at these times of the day. So, a chemical attack will have it's best effect an hour of so either side of sunrise/sunset. Also, being vapors and airborne particles they are heavier than air so they will seek low places like ditches, basements and underground garages. This stuff won't work when it's freezing, it doesn't last when it's hot, and wind spreads it too thin too fast. They've got to get this stuff on you, or, get you to inhale it for it to work. They also have to get the concentration of chemicals high enough to kill or wound you. Too little and it's nothing, too much and it's wasted. What I hope you've gathered by this point is that a chemical weapons attack that kills a lot of people is incredibly hard to do with military grade agents and equipment so you can imagine how hard it will be for terrorists. The more you know about this stuff the more you realize how hard it is to use. We'll start by talking about nerve agents. You have these in your house, plain old bug killer (like Raid) is nerve agent. All nerve agents work the same way; they are cholinesterase inhibitors that mess up the signals your nervous system uses to make your body function. It can harm you if you get it on your skin but it works best if they can get you to inhale it. If you don't die in the first minute and you can leave the area you're probably going to live. The military's antidote for all nerve agents is atropine and pralidoxime chloride. Neither one of these does anything to cure the nerve agent, they send your body into overdrive to keep you alive for five minutes, after that the agent is used up. Your best protection is fresh air and staying calm. Listed below are the symptoms for nerve agent poisoning. Sudden headache, Dimness of vision (someone you're looking at will have pinpointed pupils), Runny nose, Excessive saliva or drooling, Difficulty breathing, Tightness in chest, Nausea, Stomach cramps, Twitching of exposed skin where a liquid just got on you. If you are in public and you start experiencing these symptoms, first ask yourself, did anything out of the ordinary just happen, a loud pop, did someone spray something on the crowd? Are other people getting sick too? Is there an odor of new mown hay, green corn, something fruity, or camphor where it shouldn't be? If the answer is yes, then calmly (if you panic you breathe faster and inhale more air/poison) leave the area and head up wind, or, outside. Fresh air is the best "right now antidote". If you have a blob of liquid that looks like molasses or Kayro syrup on you; blot it or scrape it off and away from yourself with anything disposable. This stuff works based on your body weight, what a crop duster uses to kill bugs won't hurt you unless you stand there and breathe it in real deep, then lick the residue off the ground for while. Remember they have to do all the work, they have to get the concentration up and keep it up for several minutes while all you have to do is quit getting it on you/quit breathing it by putting space between you and the attack. Blood agents are cyanide or arsine which effect your blood's ability to provide oxygen to your tissue. The scenario for attack would be the same as nerve agent. Look for a pop or someone splashing/spraying something and folks around there getting woozy/falling down. The telltale smells are bitter almonds or garlic where it shouldn't be. The symptoms are blue lips, blue under the fingernails rapid breathing. The military's antidote is amyl nitride and just like nerve agent antidote it just keeps your body working for five minutes till the toxins are used up. Fresh air is the your best individual chance. Blister agents (distilled mustard) are so nasty that nobody wants to even handle it let alone use it. It's almost impossible to handle safely and may have delayed effect of up to 12 hours. The attack scenario is also limited to the things you'd see from other chemicals. If you do get large, painful blisters for no apparent reason, don't pop them, if you must, don't let the liquid from the blister get on any other area, the stuff just keeps on spreading. It's just as likely to harm the user as the target. Soap, water, sunshine, and fresh air are this stuff's enemy. Bottom line on chemical weapons (it's the same if they use industrial chemical spills); they are intended to make you panic, to terrorize you, to heard you like sheep to the wolves. If there is an attack, leave the area and go upwind, or to the sides of the wind stream. They have to get the stuff to you, and on you. You're more likely to be hurt by a drunk driver on any given day than be hurt by one of these attacks. Your odds get better if you leave the area. Soap, water, time, and fresh air really deal this stuff a knock-out-punch. Don't let fear of an isolated attack rule your life. The odds are really on your side. Nuclear bombs. These are the only weapons of mass destruction on earth. The effects of a nuclear bomb are heat, blast, EMP, and radiation. If you see a bright flash of light like the sun, where the sun isn't, fall to the ground! The heat will be over a second. Then there will be two blast waves, one out going, and one on it's way back. Don't stand up to see what happened after the first wave; anything that's going to happen will have happened in two full minutes. These will be low yield devices and will not level whole cities. If you live through the heat, blast, and initial burst of radiation, you'll probably live for a very very long time. Radiation will not create fifty foot tall women, or giant ants and grass hoppers the size of tanks. These will be at the most 1 kiloton bombs; that's the equivalent of 1,000 tons of TNT. Here's the real deal, flying debris and radiation will kill a lot of exposed (not all!) people within a half mile of the blast. Under perfect conditions this is about a half mile circle of death and destruction, but, when it's done it's done. EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse and it will fry every electronic device for a good distance, it's impossible to say what and how far but probably not over a couple of miles from ground zero is a good guess. Cars, cell phones, computers, ATMs, you name it, all will be out of order. There are lots of kinds of radiation, you only need to worry about three, the others you have lived with for years. You need to worry about "Ionizing radiation," these are little sub atomic particles that go whizzing along at the speed of light. They hit individual cells in your body, kill the nucleus and keep on going. That's how you get radiation poisoning, you have so many dead cells in your body that the decaying cells poison you. It's the same as people getting radiation treatments for cancer, only a bigger area gets radiated. The good news is you don't have to just sit there and take it, and there's lots you can do rather than panic. First; your skin will stop alpha particles, a page of a news paper or your clothing will stop beta particles, you just gotta try and avoid inhaling dust that's contaminated with atoms that are emitting these things and you'll be generally safe from them. Gamma rays are particles that travel like rays (quantum physics makes my brain hurt) and they create the same damage as alpha and beta particles only they keep going and kill lots of cells as they go all the way through your body. It takes a lot to stop these things, lots of dense material, on the other hand it takes a lot of this to kill you. Your defense is as always to not panic. Basic hygiene and normal preparation are your friends. All canned or frozen food is safe to eat. The radiation poisoning will not effect plants so fruits and vegetables are OK if there's no dust on them (rinse them off if there is). If you don't have running water and you need to collect rain water or use water from wherever, just let it sit for thirty minutes and skim off the water gently from the top. The dust with the bad stuff in it will settle and the remaining water can be used for the toilet which will still work if you have a bucket of water to pour in the tank. Finally there's biological warfare. There's not much to cover here. Basic personal hygiene and sanitation will take you further than a million doctors. Wash your hands often, don't share drinks, food, sloppy kisses, etc., ... with strangers. Keep your garbage can with a tight lid on it, don't have standing water (like old buckets, ditches, or kiddie pools) laying around to allow mosquitoes breeding room. This stuff is carried by vectors, that is bugs, rodents, and contaminated material. If biological warfare is as easy as the TV makes it sound, why has Saddam Hussein spent twenty years, millions, and millions of dollars trying to get it right? If you're clean of person and home you eat well and are active you're gonna live. Overall preparation for any terrorist attack is the same as you'd take for a big storm. If you want a gas mask, fine, go get one. I know this stuff and I'm not getting one and I told my Mom not to bother with one either (how's that for confidence). We have a week's worth of cash, several days worth of canned goods and plenty of soap and water. We don't leave stuff out to attract bugs or rodents so we don't have them. These people can't conceive a nation this big with this much resources. These weapons are made to cause panic, terror, and to demoralize. If we don't run around like sheep they won't use this stuff after they find out it's no fun. The government is going nuts over this stuff because they have to protect every inch of America. You've only gotta protect yourself, and by doing that, you help the country. Finally, there are millions of caveats to everything I wrote here and you can think up specific scenarios where my advice isn't the best. This letter is supposed to help the greatest number of people under the greatest number of situations. If you don't like my work, don't nit pick, just sit down and explain chemical, nuclear, and biological warfare in a document around three pages long yourself. This is how we the people of the United States can rob these people of their most desired goal, your terror.

I've seen the runenrs, but they look like they are only for wooden staircases. (You have to screw those holder bars into the wood.) Any ideas? Thanks, Gina

It took me 3 days to get the frame done in between doing other things, digging a trench one day, bolting boards another, this am I made two little corner seats sanded and painted it, then, my GOOD friend and neighbor Shauna took me the gravel pit in her big ol' truck and helped me bring home the ONE TON of sand I needed. THEN she even helped haul it to the back yard wheel barrel by wheel barrel. All done now YAY!!!!!! Missy

4 rooms plus!

2007-01-22 14:38:43

On the decorating topic I have about four different projects started and none finished......my house looks like a hurricane hit it ....inside not out. I need one of those house makeover shows to come to my house! Boy, Heather I can relate here. Mostly thought I am sitting back and waiting for tradesmen. They are all my husbands friends and do the work for free, but I have been waiting for my drywall for 5 months now! I have 1 bathroom and my son's new bedroom in shambles. An Artist at work!!! My husband is terribly talented, but gets about 95% completed and never goes back to finish... Last year he laid 16" scalloped edged tile through out the entire house, it BEAUTIFUL! But I am still waiting for the floor boards to be replaced :o) Then there is the Cantina in the Garage that I started before I became pregnant with my first son. How many of you end up with your parties in the Garage? So I was decorating it. But in AZ, you can only work in the garage a few months a year... this was started 3 years ago.. (starring a ground, twisting toe back and forth) Sure can relate!!! Angie

Kathie's House Description

2007-01-22 04:12:16

The house is a 200 year old colonial with an addition that is about 30 years old or so * probably newer...I am not sure..have to find that part out*, 2600 square feet *OHHH am I gonna be in heaven!*, 2 staircases, 4 bedrooms, a finished attic with fixed stairs, 2 full bathrooms upstairs, wood floors in all of the old part of the house but all but the dining room is covered with either new carpeting or lino * bathrooms and kitchen*, master bedroom and family room are both 16 x 28, 10 ceiling fans * no central air but 4 big room a/c units...fine by me! *, on 3/4 an acre, sits back 1/2 acre from the road, big 2 + car garage with a full bath * to be my photo/sewing studio eventually*, small above ground pool * needs some work on the liner but HEY *. Those are the highlights...the carpets are all NICE and good colors..the kitchen floor is new....white lino with black diamond...and one bathroom DOES have carpet in it...underneath are wood floors...so it might be pulled up and put new carpet down or lino..or maybe just an area rug. Don't know yet...have to live in it a while *plus we will be cash poor for a bit*. So til I am in, I don't have any plans to speak of. :-) Kathie

Trick or Treat Idea

2007-01-20 22:26:06

Hey if you are looking for a safe trick or treat experience for your kids, check out your local nursing home. I am a Nursing Home activity director, and here is what we do at our home. I buy about $400.00 worth of candy (but not with cash, lol! I charge it...to the nursing home..comes out of my activity budget). We line the residents up in the hallway and the living room and invite the kids to come trick or treat. they go down the line and each resident has candy to give out. the kids get candy from about 60 people.....and i think every kid in town comes!!! we advertise in the paper, and in 30 minutes the candy is gone! the residents LOVE seeing the kids in costumes, they love giving them candy. Even residents that are very withdrawn "come to life" on this night. (lol..sounds like the makings of an eerie tale...Liz, i share your sick sense of humor..makes life easier, lol!). The kids get great interactions with our elders, and a safe place to trick or treat. And we NEVER poison our candy. If your local nursing home doesn't do this, suggest it to them. If they have any questions give them my email address and i will be glad to help them out. my work email address, not this one. Give them this one: activities@... Just an idea!!!!! Debby P. S. If your local nursing home doesn't have the budget to buy this much candy, I'll bet the community would pitch in and help for a safe halloween alternative.

happy item/yard

2007-01-20 19:42:04

Since the thought of trick or treating is scary and depressing now, I am making a sandbox for my kids today!!!! Just decided to get out and do somethin' FUN!!! Have a section of yard behind a retaining wall that somehow was left un-landscaped, so now I have something to put there that doesn't require watering and will help keep the mess off my patio!!! If this goes well, I also have room to put a small playhouse out there too..... Missy

OT - Trick or Treating

2007-01-20 19:35:07

I was one Mom (a very long time ago ......25 years+) that worried a lot over Halloween threats. My fears only worsened when my children became older. I always inspected every piece of candy in their bags. No homemade goods were allowed or items not in sealed packagess. Today, I would be concerned about any package even sealed, as I know how easy a package could be opened and then resealed and look like it hasn't been tampered with. The way we dealt with my concerns is that the children picked out the candy they wanted to give out. I bought far more than what would be needed and they got the remainder. They still were able to go out in costume, but all bags were carefully inspected and most contents were discarded. It was a good compromise. Also, we only went around our immediate neighborhood. Today, I would have concerns the neighbors could innocently and unknowingly be handing out tainted items. As they became older (and I thought I was less in control), I would plan a mountain camping trip in the mountains of Big Bear with them inviting 2 friends each. They were happy for the camping trip instead of trick or treating. Adrienne Stamper's Emporium PSX Design, Clearsnap, Uptown Design, Stampendous, My Heart Stamps for You, Faerieland Products

What is the proper order of painting?

2007-01-19 22:21:53

Hi, I am one of the people who takes a really long time before starting a home improvement project. Last week I tackled cleaning the entire garage, which hadn't been really cleaned out in years, and I did it by myself, without very much stress. I am about ready to take the plunge and paint our bedroom-all by myself-which I've never done. I decided so that I don't stress myself out and make everyone else in the family miserable, that I would paint the ceiling one day, then move on to the rest of the room, wall by wall. The ceiling will be white, the walls blue, and the trim white. In the past, I've always painted the ceiling first, then the walls, then the trim. But I've been told that the trim should be done before the walls. So, I'm asking your expert advice--which comes first, the trim or the walls? And why? Thanks so much. Stephanie Sewin_Mom@...

Getting that Autumn Spirit

2007-01-19 07:49:49

This weekend, I decided to get up in the attic and get down my 3 (count them 3) Halloween decorations. Needless to say, I have left them in the attic for the past 3 years. I really wanted to put a little Autumn spirit in the house. I have 2 giant stuffed pumpkin people that my mil gave the girls many moons ago. They stand about 3 feet tall when standing, but they are made to sit. I have an old porch swing that my dh has yet to hang up for me so me being me...I made do. I got 2 concrete bricks and set them on the porch and then set the swing on top of them. It looks like a bench now! I set the 2 pumpkin people on it with my last item, a fake jackolantern with a lightbulb inside. It looks really cute, if I do say so myself. Then I went to Wal-mart and bought 2 fall flower bush thingys. They were $3.00 each and together they make a pretty decent Autumn arrangement. I put them in an old pumpkin trick or treat bucket on the dining room table and voila...we are now decorated for Halloween. I watched the Martha Stewart special for Halloween on HGTV this weekend and I got inspired. Did anyone else watch that? The giant spider in the yard was sooooo COOL! Terri Who will be getting ready for mine and my hubbies 40th birthday soon...any suggestions for party ideas?

make-your-own fabric paint

2007-01-18 23:50:38

Has anyone ever mixed up the exact color they want (I'm using Delta paints) and then mixed Delta Textile Medium into it to stamp onto fabric? I'm trying to match my wall color to stamp a design onto my white cotton curtains, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or pitfalls to relate. If you care: I'm using an intricate stamp of a hyacinth on the curtains themselves, and plan to create an over-stamp of the design to make a not-quite-solid band of color on the drapes that I'll hang over them as a scarf. It's a design I got out of a Good Housekeeping magazine a couple of years ago. Barb

I would like to see (for those people who DO decorate their yards) the red/white/blue pride continue on thru the holidays. I would like to see red, white AND blue Christmas lights on homes this year as December/Christmas approaches. Decorate your yard how you may normally decorate (with Nativity scenes, snowmen, reindeer, candy canes, angels, etc.) but just use the 3 colors of red/white/blue lights around the frame of your home instead of multi-color, all white, all red, etc. Pass this along to your friends, colleagues, neighbors, family, church, banks, schools, etc. - and let's show everyone that "God Blesses America" and we are "One Nation Under God" Dorenda Phillips:-) Murrieta, California

U won't believe it 'til U try it! The reports are worth every last

2007-01-18 02:53:11

Dear Friends: The reports are worth every last penny ! The first time I received this in my e-mail I deleted it! And later wished I had it back! I had to wait months before someone E-mailed me again with this offer! I always thought I would wait until later to try this. I wish I had done it sooner now! Don't do what I did! Make Sure you Go For it! I personally thought that this would not work! But as many of you I was involved in MLM marketing, which in most cases did not work! I was spending from $20 to $200 a month on FAA pages and other things to get leads to market my product. And like many of you probably have noticed, is that most people that post to theses pages are like you and I. They have a product to sell! They're not there to BUY! So most of us end up spinning our wheels and getting NOWARE! SO I thought when I came across this E-Mail. What did I have to lose? It was a lot less money than what I had been spending, and it was only $25.00. I thought even if it did not work, I have lost a lot more money than that from other MLM and scams on the net, what was another $25.00? And I did see this on T.V. So What the Heck I gave it a shot. AND BOY I AM GLAD I DID!!!! The first month only a few hundred came in, the next I could not believe it! It really worked!!! So now I am going to run it one more time! And I Am sure it will be just as good as the first! That is what is nice about this program you can start over and over again once you're off the 5th level. If you're A GOOD HONEST PERSON IT WILL WORK FOR YOU TOO!! THINK ABOUT IT MOST OF US ARE OR WERE IN SO DEEP THAT WE WOULD NOT EVEN BLINK ABOUT ANOTHER $25.00.. SO WHY WOULD YOU NOW? GO FOR IT! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! AS SEEN ON NATIONAL TV: Making over half million dollars every 4 to 5 months from your home for an investment of only $25 U.S. Dollars expense one time THANK'S TO THE COMPUTER AGE AND THE INTERNET! Before you say ''BULL'', please read the following. This is the letter you have been hearing about on the news lately. Due to the popularity of this letter on the Internet, a national weekly news program recently devoted an entire show to the investigation of this program described below, to see if it really can make people money. The show also investigated whether or not the program was legal. Their findings proved once and for all that there are ''absolutely NO Laws prohibiting the participation in the program and if people can -follow the simple instructions, they are bound to make some mega bucks with only $25 out of pocket cost''! If you are top MLM then you definitely know ! you cant much higher than this ! =============================================================== This is what one had to say: '' Thanks to this profitable opportunity. I was approached many times before but each time I passed on it. I am so glad I finally joined just to see what one could expect in return for the minimal effort and money required. To my astonishment, I received total $ 610,470.00 in 21 weeks, with money still coming in''. Pam Hedland, Fort Lee, New Jersey. ============================================================= Here is another testimonial: ''' this program has been around for a long time but I never believed in it. But one day when I received this again in the mail I decided to gamble my $25 on it. I followed the simple instructions and walaa ..... 3 weeks later the money started to come in. First month I only made $240.00 but the next 2 months after that I made a total of $290,000.00. So far, in the past 8 months by re-entering the program, I have made over $710,000.00 and I am playing it again. The key to success in this program is to follow the simple steps and NOT change anything.'' More testimonials later but first: ===== PRINT THIS NOW FOR YOUR FUTURE REFERENCE ======== $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ If you would like to make at least $500,000 every 4 to 5 months easily and comfortably, please read the following...THEN READ IT AGAIN and AGAIN !!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE INSTRUCTION AND YOUR FINANCIAL DREAMS WILL COME TRUE, GUARANTEED! =====ORDER ALL 5 REPORTS SHOWN ON THE LIST BELOW ===== For each report, send $5 CASH, THE NAME NUMBER OF THE REPORT YOU ARE ORDERING and YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS to the person whose name appears ON THAT LIST next to the report. MAKE SURE YOUR RETURN ADDRESS IS ON YOUR ENVELOPE TOP LEFT CORNER in case of any mail problems. When you place your order, make sure you order each of the 5 reports. You will need all 5 reports so that you can save them on your computer and resell them. YOUR TOTAL COST $5 X 5=$25.00. Within a few days you will receive, via e-mail, each of the 5 reports from these 5 different individuals. Save them on your computer so they will be accessible for you to send to the 1,000's of people who will order them from you. Also make a floppy of these reports and keep it on your desk in case something happens to your computer. IMPORTANT - DO NOT alter the names of the people who are listed next to each report, or their sequence on the list, in any way other than what is instructed below in step '' 1 through 6 '' or you will loose out on majority of your profits. Once you understand the way this works, you will also see how it does not work if you change it. Remember, this method has been tested, and if you alter, it will NOT work!!! People have tried to put their friends/relatives names on all five thinking they could get all the money. But it does not work this way. Believe us, we all have tried to be greedy and then nothing happened. So Do Not try to change anything other than what is instructed. Because if you do, it will not work for you. REMEMBER, HONESTY REAPS THE REWARD!!! 1.... After you have ordered all 5 reports, take this advertisement and REMOVE the name address of the person in REPORT # 5. This person has made it through the cycle and is no doubt counting their fortune. 2.... Move the name address in REPORT # 4 down TO REPORT # 5. 3.... Move the name address in REPORT # 3 down TO REPORT # 4. 4.... Move the name address in REPORT # 2 down TO REPORT # 3. 5.... Move the name address in REPORT # 1 down TO REPORT # 2 6.... Insert YOUR name address in the REPORT # 1 Position. PLEASE MAKE SURE you copy every name address ACCURATELY! ============================================================= Take this entire letter, with the modified list of names, and save it on your computer. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES. Save this on a disk as well just in case you loose any data. To assist you with marketing your business on the internet, the 5 reports you purchase will provide you with invaluable marketing information which includes how to send bulk e-mails legally, where to find thousands of free classified ads and much more. There are 2 Primary methods to get this venture going: ============================================================ METHOD # 1: BY SENDING BULK E-MAIL LEGALLY ============================================================= Let's say that you decide to start small, just to see how it goes, and we will assume You and those involved send out only 5,000 e-mails each. Let's also assume that the mailing receive only a 0.2% response (the response could be much better but lets just say it is only 0.2%. Also many people will send out hundreds of thousands e-mails instead of only 5,000 each). Continuing with this example, you send out only 5,000 e-mails. With a 0.2% response, that is only 10 orders for report # 1. Those 10 people responded by sending out 5,000 e-mail each for a total of 50,000. Out of those 50,000 e-mails only 0.2% responded with orders. That's=100 people responded and ordered Report # 2. Those 100 people mail out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 500,000 e-mails. The 0.2% response to that is 1000 orders for Report # 3. Those 1000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 5 million e-mails sent out. The 0.2% response to that is 10,000 orders for Report! # 4. Those 10,000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 50,000,000 (50 million) e-mails. The 0.2% response to that is 100,000 orders for Report # 5 THAT'S 100,000 ORDERS TIMES $5 EACH=$500,000.00 (half million). Your total income in this example is: 1 = $50 + 2 = $500 + 3 = $5,000 + 4 = $50,000 + 5 = $500,000 Grand Total=$555,550.00 NUMBERS DO NOT LIE. GET A PENCIL PAPER AND FIGURE OUT THE WORST POSSIBLE RESPONSES AND NO MATTER HOW YOU CALCULATE IT, YOU WILL STILL MAKE A LOT OF MONEY! ============================================================= REMEMBER FRIEND, THIS IS ASSUMING ONLY 10 PEOPLE ORDERING OUT OF 5,000 YOU MAILED TO. Dare to think for a moment what would happen if everyone or half or even one 4th of those people mailed 100,000e-mails each or more? There are over 150 million people on the Internet worldwide and counting. Believe me, many people will do just that, and more! ============================================================= METHOD # 2: BY PLACING FREE ADS ON THE INTERNET ============================================================= Advertising on the net is very very inexpensive and there are hundreds of FREE places to advertise. Placing a lot of free ads on the Internet will easily get a larger response. We strongly suggest you start with Method # 1 and add METHOD # 2 as you go along. For every $5 you receive, all you must do is e-mail them the Report they ordered. That's it. Always provide same day service on all orders. This will guarantee that the e-mail they send out, with your name and address on it, will be prompt because they can not advertise until they receive the report. ===========AVAILABLE REPORTS ==================== ORDER EACH REPORT BY ITS NUMBER NAME ONLY. Notes: Always send $5 cash (U.S. CURRENCY) for each Report. Checks NOT accepted. Make sure the cash is concealed by wrapping it in at least 2 sheets of paper. On one of those sheets of paper, Write the NUMBER the NAME of the Report you are ordering, YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS and your name and postal address. how to remove paint from wood??

2007-01-17 20:38:37

I would do a test spot...chances are all the wood should be painted. Its possible that someone put NEW wood (fine grade trim) around the one room you saw. Most old wood was meant to be painted, for instance, our house would have never had stained wood trim around the doors and windows, it was/is a rural farmhouse although the original owner did have a good stash of cash even back then stone houses cost more than frame houses). Our floors were originally stained though. Good luck! I was told by someone that taking paint off trim was one of the hardest jobs! Brenda

Well, I seriously started working on the giraffe storage/table you make out of a crate for my son's jungle room. It is really turning out cute, all I have left to do is paint the fun stuff, like the spots and the face. I will, of course, take a pic when I'm done and inundate you all with pictures of a bunch of stuff from the last 3 months, lol. It just takes me forever to take 36 pictures! But that's one thing I was up to with my zip saw this week, the other was using 1/4 in plywood to make a set of pumpkin faces for a mini-goofy golf set for the kid's Fall festival at church. They hit the ball through the jack-o-lantern's mouths, I had a lot of fun painting the goofy faces. I will get them back tomorrow, my husband wants them out in the front yard, lol, so I'll take a pic of them as well. Missy

Hi, I'm new here ;o)

2007-01-15 15:58:26

My name is Cathy and I am in the Southeastern part of Pa. I have a new home, well 2 years new in January. :o) My entryway is what I will need help with 1st. Its an open foyer, but a small one. I would like to have a garden theme on the walls. I don't think any furniture will really fit so I got stencils for flowers, a basket, and bird house accents. I think I will go with Iron accents for a trellis around the open doors with flower vines on them because of my iron chandelier. Its not a typical chandelier, it looks like a colonial lantern that you would light with candles, but with lights. I also found a neat flower holder made out of iron for above the front door. I can change the flowers seasonally. I need lots of tips for how to do this without messing up. I'm a nervous wreck. I have LOTS of ideas, but sometimes lack the guts to actually "paint" them on the wall. LOL. I'm sure no one can relate to having lots of ideas and so little time to do them. I think that's been my M.O. , LOL!! I always have lots of ideas that I will plan out and buy the stuff I need. I think I could have a sale with all the things I have collected for "ideas" and never got done. I'm hoping that with this list, I will "get inspired, and get some stuff done! Glad to meet all of you! Cathy

Update - Dungeon

2007-01-15 14:19:19

OK...another day and still painting the mud room yellow. Seems the walls just soaked up the paint and had to do second coat. First of the week will begin the stenciling. At least think will get it started/ CHANGE....AGAIN! This morning went to the carpet store and totally changed our minds about the blue/while tile. We picked out a gorgeous tile that looks like marble. It has gold's, copper, ivory, green and dash of blue. We brought home a large sample of the tile and sample of carpeting. The carpeting is a light beige tone and now will paint the walls one shade darker than the carpeting. Still have to find the correct sofa...but still leaning toward the denim blue sofa. In all the still to be unpacked boxes are several items (1908 Johnson Wax Can for one) that will bring lots of color into the dungeon. Jayne, I agree with you about the blue. Because the dungeon has no windows going heavy on blues would make for a cold and dreary room. OMG...that would be another dungeon with clean walls. I will bring some of the mud room yellow into the dungeon...like sunshine. As for the pole....putting shelving on the pole would cut off the room even more. So may just paint that sucker to look like a tree and place silk plants around the base. Thanks for the compliment on the Dallas apartment. It was fun decorating...and now have an entire house to decorate....you bet....am loving it. Stay tuned for further dungeon adventures. Margaret of Margaret's Manor in PA

Dungeon

2007-01-15 08:17:13

One step forward today. Painted the mud room yellow. This is lower entrance into house and goes into the dungeon. Tomorrow will stencil picket fence around the mud room and then begin paint flower, leaves and vines. In my mind I see a happy looking room. TODAY....hubby said paint the paneling so q uickly bought primer before he changes his mind. We are putting navy and white tile down in the mud room. Just having the yellow make a big difference. Didn't take a before picture...just imagine and small room with yucky, dusty blue on the walls...cat litter box, coat rack and dog dish. That about explains that room. Am waiting for the new accent rug to arrive from QVC before selecting the shade of blue to use in the dungeon and it will be here first of the week. This is exciting!!!! Late...so good night all....Margaret of Margaret's Manor in PA

Lightening faux stones

2007-01-14 22:57:16

I need help... Bare with me as I try to explain what I am trying to do. I am making a stone wall in the back of an L shaped hallway. My house is in a southwest/cabin sort of feel. Have you seen those stone fireplaces in those expensive SW homes? I am doing that in faux. I am using masking tape to mask off the stones, and then using Joint compound applied to the wall and a stipple brush to rough it up like stone. I have about 12 different shades of browns from palest grayish beige white, to chocolate brown. Looks Cool... BUT!!! The back of the hall gets no natural light unless the bedrooms are open. I have run into this problem before, so let me take a step back... I painted my hall an off white with a hint of the warm side to the color. During the day my walls are off white, at night, with the glow of the incandescent lights, it is PINK!!!! So guess what my stones do at night.... I think the cure for the awful night time color is to lighten the whole thing up. Isn't there a glaze that I can use to apply? I don't want it to look white washed, just lighter... HELP!!! Angie

Primer/men

2007-01-14 13:56:16

Maybe if you can't paint it you can upholster it, or put fabric over it that has been starched to stick up, or set lattice up against it and greenery on the lattice... In other words, if ya can't stand it and can't change it, HIDE IT! Denise

Antique Pewter Chandelier

2007-01-14 11:47:43

From: Craftdesign1@... [mailto:Craftdesign1@...] Also how do I determine what size ceiling medallion to buy? Do I go by the size of the room? [[snip]] I have a real pewter chandelier that came with the house. Would it be wrong to spray paint it gold? My dining room has mostly gold accents and would like to mimic the look. Any suggestions would be terrific.

Fw: Capt. John McCain

2007-01-14 02:00:40

I heard him tell this story a long time ago....Missy Please read and pass it on! Another wonderful piece I have to share. Subject: JOHN MCCAIN Speech made by Capt. John McCain Date: 10/7/01 From a speech made by Capt. John S. McCain, USN, (Ret) who represents Arizona in the US Senate: As you may know, I spent five and one half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. In the early years of our imprisonment, the NVA kept us in solitary confinement or two or three to a cell. In 1971 the NVA moved us from these conditions of isolation into large rooms with as many as 30 to 40 men to a room. This was, as you can imagine, a wonderful change and was a direct result of the efforts of millions of Americans on behalf of a few hundred POWs 10,000 miles from home. One of the men who moved into my room was a young man named Mike Christian. Mike came from a small town near Selma, Alabama. He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School. Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967. Mike had a keen and deep appreciation of the opportunities this country-and our military-provide for people who want to work and want to succeed. As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing. Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed on the inside of his shirt. Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance. I know the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important part of our day now, but I can assure you that in that stark cell it was indeed the most important and meaningful event. One day the Vietnamese searched our cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it. That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and for the benefit of all us, beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him in. We cleaned him up as well as we could. The cell in which we lived had a concrete slab in the middle on which we slept. Four naked light bulbs hung in each corner of the room. As said, we tried to clean up Mike as well as we could. After the excitement died down, I looked in the corner of the room, and sitting there beneath that dim light bulb with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, was my friend, Mike Christian. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag. He was not making the flag because it made Mike Christian feel better. He was making that flag because he knew how important it was to us to be able to Pledge our allegiance to our flag and country. So the next time you say the Pledge of Allegiance, you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country. "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." PASS THIS ON... and on... and on!!!!!! Charmaine

Bath in PA home

2007-01-12 21:08:57

Here is view of very small bathroom....dear Lord, please bring me a LARGE bathroom. But, I bit the bullet and painted the very plain white walls burgandy. The border was the inspiration for wall color. I do like the new look and new DH is very pleased at how the blah bath now looks. Will add couple more accessories...whenever I find them in boxes waiting to be unpacked. Picture showing border will be sent following this mailing. Margaret of Margaret's Manor in PA

Thinking out loud here....

2007-01-12 07:03:06

I finally decided to give the Surefit covers a try. I ordered Moss Green, mainly because it was darker, and figured that a lighter shade (natural muslin) wouldn't give me the anchor I am looking for. Now, the whole object of the game is this - a more cottagy feel in the living room. The style of the sofa is very traditional (camel back, formal fabric in pastels) and I think that once I get these cotton covers on the sofa and loveseat, it will bring them right down. I was thinking of white lace panels on the windows, and white embroidered, crocheted and "vintage" damask napkins made into pillow covers for the couch toss cushions. Does this sound too dull? I have chrystals that I want to hang in the window, and my only ornament is an Irish Chrystal vase. I have a print of a Quebec country house in the winter - and an oriental watercolour of two sparrows on a branch. Both give the impression of "taupe" and white when veiwed through a sidewise 'squint', as you use when checking wallpaper patterns! Being of Danish descent, white on white embroidery is traditional, Tivoli gardens, although I have never been there, has all white lights and is so beautiful! So, I think I have a "white on white" gene floating in my system that I just can't shake ...at one time I had five sets of white china! All my bedding is white, as are my towels). I also want to get rid of the kitchen table and have a large island installed so I only have one table to worry about. The dining room is located between the living room and kitchen, and it seems we go through the dining room, livingroom to go downstairs to our family room. I want to draw us into the unused rooms. I was also thinking that putting a small TV in the living room would be nice, because I could stop for a few minutes during the day to catch the news or whatever..yes, the little tv is white...Anyway, my husband thinks curtains with big red roses would be nice, but something inside of me wants to jump off a bridge when I even think of it! Advice would be so welcome!

tiling countertops

2007-01-12 01:58:57

Hello, Was talking "handy man" talk with my dad, mentioned to him that I would like to tile my blah standard white marble counter tops with some very smooth stylish and interesting I saw my neighbor the "pool guy" (works for major pool builder) use on the lp of his extreme pool, oh I should take a pic of it, it's incredible! Anyway, my dad said he thought he heard there is some sort of new sealer paint you can paint the marble with, then tilr right over it and it works great,is it kilz?

Primer

Am getting ready to paint the paneling in the dungeon family room. What would you recommend for primer. The paneling is real wood...of course has grooves and knots. My goal is to make this windowless room warm, cozy and very inviting.. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Margaret of Margaret's Manor in PA

Fences

2007-01-11 12:42:51

cabinet pulls

2007-01-11 09:32:50

Does anyone know if there is a standard size of cabinet door pulls? I am getting my cupboards ready to paint and took all the handles off and I will be replacing them I am just wondering if I need to fill the holes or can I find some the same size? The holes are 2.5" apart now I am sure they are the same handles as when the house was built 20 years ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Heather www.mainlybears.com

I'm using uswest.net as isp and netscape 6. Any suggestions? It's driving me crazy.....I could run these messages around the U.S. and swim the 7 seas to deliver them personally faster than I can do anything here!! Not funny. Very frustating. Family Room

2007-01-10 16:08:56

WELL....DH has agreed to let me paint this windowless room that is like a dungeon with big screen TV. We will be putting up wainscoting...so will paint lower portion Navy and then do soft sponge painting in blue/white/yellow on upper portion. We still have to pick out the carpeting...and that will be a light color...most likely basic beige. Will then shop for area rug that combines the above colors. At least that is the color plan at this moment. Any idea? Remember, I sent message last night stating I did promise him would use blue in this room. By the way...have a great fondness for Frank Lloyd Wright designs. I grew up in a town with that style or architecture. Alden Dow, student of FLW, was major designer for my home town. Dow's home looks much like the waterfall home here in PA and I happily spent many hours in that home while teenager. OK...enough for now...back to thinking what to do with this room. quilting advice

2007-01-10 03:40:04

After a very lazy Saturday I decided I really needed to get something done on Sunday. I decided to start on a project that I have been putting aside for years. I have saved all of my old t-shirts from different places, concerts, etc. I wanted to cut out the design on them and make a quilt. I got all of the designs cut out but that is where I ran into a problem. The designs were not uniform of course so the "squares" are all different sizes. Now my left brain wants to take over and do this mathmatically...measure all the squares and figure out the best arrangement, but my right brain says wing it. What would be a good way to get started on this. Do I lay them all out and try to come up with the closest squared off arrangement or do I just put them whereever and have seams running everywhere? Any advice would be appreciated. I have never quilted anything before so this is a new one for me. If it turns out well then I want to do another one with my daughter's soccer tournie shirts and her soccer uniform shirt in the middle. (She no longer plays, but she did for almost 7 years and it was such a big part of our lives that I want to do something special with all of those t-shirts). Terri

Help, I have no decorating sense

2007-01-09 19:03:15

A while ago I papered my bedroom, but something never really looked right. The border is a deep green with small overlapping pointy scallops of gold, navy, burgundy,lt blue (there is a name for this type pattern, but I can't recall). Immediately below is a 6" floral border with a deep green background for a border total of about 18- 20" which, of course mimics same colors. The wall the headboard is against is a cream background with coordinating floral design. Carpet is gold (only because we can't replace it yet) The remaining 3 walls are painted a cream to match the background of the papered wall. But something doesn't seem to balance in the room. The dark border seems too heavy for the cream walls. Wondering if I should paint the walls another color, and what color/pattern bedspread (currently a deep green w/burgundy and gold, lt blue) and color/style draperies would go (currently floor length cream sheers. Should I take down the cream/floral paper? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Marie

The Taliesin West Scoop!

2007-01-09 13:59:41

I must first say that Taliesen West is not the only native Arizona beauty. For those who haven't met our Missy--don't let her "Momness" fool you--she's a stunner!--a tall cool blonde, think Veronica Lake in sky-high platform sandals! We giggled as we walked with crooked necks through the hallways and doorways, the tops of our heads actually touching the ceiling. We emerged triumphantly--unbruised! It was a glorious autumnal desert day, impossibly blue skies and 90 degrees with a slight breeze to whisk immediately away any perspiration that dare may form. Unfortunately we had a short time together, I being 10 minutes late and under time constraints, most of our time was spent on the tour. We grabbed snippets of conversation when we could. I had a wonderful time. Missy even brought me a surprise bag of gifts--delicious homemade monster cookies which were promptly eaten when jet-lag set in that afternoon, handmade chocolate truffles (those were eaten with a spoon! They had melted--but made a lovely evening snack), a candle which really came in handy when the power outage hit the hotel Saturday morning, and dried pomegranates from her garden--which will be added to the potpourri bowl. If that is the momness you were referring to Missy, you are fabulously guilty! Don't you dare shed the special brand of momness! It was a fabulous time. Kurt www.kurtcyr.com

cowboy room

2007-01-09 01:21:00

Angie, LOVE the cowboy room, very cute. Did you do the painting yourself? Yes, I did everything free hand, although I must admit, I got the idea from a Christmas card I sent out years ago :o) I live in Az too, grew up in Mesa, Welcome to the list! Missy Small world! Are you still in the Phoenix area? I am new here with only 6 years under my belt, but I do love it! (esp. now that the heat has finally broken)

I'm new, too

2007-01-08 16:00:12

I joined this list and have lurked long enough to see this is a great list! What helpful ideas! I can't wait to do a fall center piece! I wasn't going to do Thanksgiving this year as I am 7 months pregnant NOW. But, I think I might just have too! I am a Mommy of a 17 month old boy and another boy do to join us January 4th. I am a horse trainer, but I think if I had to do over again, I would have loved to be a disigner. I still toy with the idea of attending the local college and at least taking the intro class. I live in Mesa AZ, but I was born and raised in the Northwest. So, I did not decorate my home in the typical southwest, but went with a cabin decor complete with Moose and Loons and Chainsaw carved bears. It leans toward the English pub feel... All my walls and ceilings are faux painted in very earth warm colors. I have done some fun things with Joint compound, as in "old world" plaster, and garden bricks below the chair rails in my bed room. My next task will be my Hallway. I want to do an effect that appears to be a stone wall.... When I get ready to tackle that one, I'll be asking for ideas! My latest was my new nursery. I finally broke down and did a cowboy theme. I'll attach a picture of the room on this email. The colors are more brite in real life. Next priority is my son's room. I am waiting on a drywaller, as I had toy boxes framed into the walls. His will be a NHRA drag racing room. I plan on doing a mural on one wall that will be looking down the drag strip. The "concrete" of the drag strip will be chalk board paint. Any suggestion? I'm sure I will be asking more questions down the road. I loose ALL CREATIVITY when I am pregnant! No joke! Thank goodness I thougth up these ideas before I became pregnant. Thanks for listening to my ramblings... Has anyone ever painted a FAUX audience? I thought about making his bifold closet doors (wall length) into a grand stand, but the thought of painting peoples faces scares me... Ideas? Thanks again! bird cages
